Publishing
Overview
Publishing today can mean so many things.
Traditionally, it is the production of printed literature to convey
a message to a target audience, whether that be information, entertainment,
educational, advertising, fiction, factual or directories; usually
in the form of printed books, flyers, magazines, newsletters, leaflets,
pamphlets, booklets, etc.
Printing was used for hundreds of years,
but now the electronic world has made creating publications on a computer
easier and cheaper. And today the publishing world is so much bigger
than just print. The Internet and computers in general have made electronic
publishing a widely available means to convey a message to the target
audience, so that the target audience can be as great as everyone who
is using the Internet.
But print still survives, and printed
matter has continued to increase. A printed book or magazine has two
advantages over an electronic version: you don't need electricity and
electrical equipment to view it; people enjoy turning the pages and
looking at printed copy -- it's more real than pixels on a screen.
The number of magazines published each year seems to be increasing
with no end ot choice. Although it is true that a major growth area
is that of computer magazines, especially those dealing just with the
Internet. Seems like electronic publishing needs printed guides to
help people access it, find it, use it.

Tip: |
| When
setting up a new document that will require more than one font or style
to be used, define your Style sheets first, adding more as you need them,
so that you can apply styles instantly to new text as appropriate |

What
is desktop publishing? It
is the production of material for print using a desktop computer, such
as newspapers, magazines, flyers, leaflets, adverts, and books.
What
is the software used? Most professional work is carried
out using the top programs, such as Quark XPress, CorelDraw, Adobe
PageMaker, Adobe InDesign, Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe Illustrator.
What
else is involved? A good understanding of typography, using
the right fonts, how to layout pages so they are easy to read, how
to use colour effectively, how to place pages in a publication so they
are in a logical order, how a photograph will reproduce in print (half
toning effects, moire effects), use of styles, logos, headers, footers,
mastheads, boxes, insets, margins, paragraphs, points/picas, etc.
Who
can do desktop publishing? It requires a certain degree
of training, experience and skill, as well as a flair for design and
a good understanding of the software you are using.

Any
pages you need for a publication need to be laid out, so that text
and graphics will give the desired effect, which should be to enhance
readability and get the message across, whether through imagery,
the words used or the overall feel of the page.

Clubs,
organisations, and companies often have newsletters for their customers,
members or staff, with a fairly low but meaningful circulation. ZAX
dtp can produce the layout of pages for newsletters, design, and
putting it all together.

|
Magazines
are usually more involved than newsletters, often on better quality
paper and with more use of colour, possibly with advertising. We
can design the pages and layout.

Advertising
is a common part of today's society, it gets you or your product
noticed.
We
can design simple flyers, classified adverts, or larger adverts for
insertion in magazines or newsletters, working to your requirements.

For
that professional touch it is nice to have letterheads, invoices,
business cards, etc, that give the right image to your contacts/customers.
We can design them for you.

Do
you have an article you want to reproduce to distribute? It can be
a few pages or a much longer article, for distribution by printed
copy or via electronic PDF. Similar to newsletters, but more of a
one-off publication.

|
Door
to door posting of flyers to get your company or product noticed
is often used and can be effective if the design of the flyer is
correct. We can do the design so that it stands out.
